ENERGY STAR® Canada program: product classification
Overview

The ENERGY STAR® Canada program helps consumers identify energy-efficient products, including windows, that reduce energy consumption and costs while protecting the environment. ENERGY STAR® certified products in Canada are classified according to several key factors determining their energy performance.

Thermal transmission coefficient (U-Factor)

Measures the insulation capacity of a window. A lower U-Factor indicated better insulation.

Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)

Indicates the fraction of solar heat transmitted indoors. A lower SHGC reduces the need for cooling, while a higher SHGC is advantageous in cold climates.

Visible transmittance (VT)

Measures the amount of visible light passing through the window. High VT means more natural light indoors.
